Mesima or Phellinus linteus is an edible mushroom that belongs to the Hymenochaetaceae and Basidiomycetes family and is found mostly in tropical America, Africa, and East Asia. It is usually known as sanghuang in China, meshimakobu in Japan, or sangwhang in Korea. It has been acknowledged as a health supplement and a traditional medicine for over 2000 years. Phellinus linteus was used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) because it was believed to relieve illness, improvement of internal body functions, treating stomach discomfort, and treating irritable bowels  .
The bioactive substances extracted from the fruiting body of Phellinus linteus were identified to be responsible for its role in promoting health properties including, polysaccharides, triterpenoids, polyphenols, and pyrans. According to human and animal studies that were carried out to examine Mesima in treating different human diseases, they reported to have a wide range of biological functions such as, cancer suppression, anti-oxidant, improving immunity system, liver protecting substance, protect against dementia and improving brain health
